Private Cloud vs Public Cloud

Which Cloud Solution is Right for Your Business?

Cloud computing allows businesses to access servers, applications, storage and other IT resources without relying entirely on infrastructure located on their own premises.

Two of the most common approaches are Private Cloud and Public Cloud. Both have advantages, but the most appropriate solution will depend on the systems you use, your security and compliance requirements, your growth plans, and the level of control you need over your infrastructure.

A Private Cloud provides a dedicated environment exclusively for your business. Resources aren’t shared with other organisations, giving you greater control over the infrastructure and letting you configure the environment to your requirements.

Private Cloud can provide enhanced security and isolation, customised networking and firewall rules, predictable performance, and greater control over data storage locations. It can also be particularly useful for legacy or business-critical applications that require a more bespoke environment.

Private Cloud

Private Cloud May Suit:

  • businesses handling sensitive data
  • organisations operating within regulated industries
  • businesses requiring custom infrastructure or configurations
  • organisations needing dedicated connectivity between sites and cloud resources.

Public Cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services operate large-scale shared infrastructures. Many customers use computing resources, while each customer’s services and data remain logically isolated.

Public Cloud enables rapid service deployment and allows resources to be scaled up or down as requirements change. It also provides access to a very wide range of technologies and services without the business having to own or manage the underlying physical infrastructure.

Public Cloud

Public Cloud May Suit:

  • growing businesses with changing capacity requirements
  • collaboration and Microsoft Azure environments
  • web applications and cloud-based services
  • backup and disaster recovery
  • organisations looking to reduce reliance on their own physical infrastructure.

What About Hybrid Cloud?

For many organisations, the answer doesn’t have to be either entirely Private or Public Cloud. A hybrid approach can keep critical applications or data within a Private Cloud while using Public Cloud services such as Microsoft 365, Azure Backup or other cloud-based applications where they make sense. This lets you design infrastructure around the business rather than forcing every system into a single model.
